Born 1961,
the artist lives and works in Ecublens, Switzerland

Artistic training was presented as part of his formal schooling including specific courses at Boston University. This combined with his recent self-study of drawing with graphite and charcoal has been the basis for his creations.

Born in Worcester Massachusetts in 1961 . Robert moved to Switzerland in 1991 where he lives with his wife and their two children.

Artist Statement
“My art communicates my emotion at the time of choosing the subject to draw. The gray scales achieved when drawing with graphite and charcoal are an ideal medium for visually expressing what I feel about a specific subject. Although the genre of my work is realistic, imitating reality is not the primary goal. I want a viewer of my work to get something out of viewing it. I want to stir some sort of memory, emotion or feeling. When the viewer identifies with a work of art then the art is a success.”

“A set of mutually contemporary occasions cannot form a complete society” (Alfred North Whitehead)

Le Societas! brings together artists from different nationalities in an exhibition that aims to trace the cohesive processes that associate many contemporary artists now.

Eschewing a singular theme, legacy or kinship, and determined instead by a critical engagement with artists processes, Le Societas! could be said to take the form of an unifying but open dialogue, a paradoxical notion intended to critically engage with the very shifting nature of the parameters of community.

In all the works presented, the artists theorize less about their own relationship to legacy rather in their production create a discourse inside it. Some of the projects offer arbitrary collage of history, while others trigger poetic translations of a fictitious past. By vividly addressing community, society and networks in building relationships with their past these dialogic works pose compelling questions about the present.

Bonni Reid - Bone Orchard
Exploring the underpinnings, bumps, and anomalies in all manner of historical arcana, Bonni Reid’s subject matter reflects a dark underlying mythos that belies the innocence, wonder, and imagination of a hazy past. Reid combines these elements in a clear, graphic, almost deadpan style, using her own hand-made ingredients mixed from gesso, egg tempera, shellac flakes and oil paint glazing for finish. Reid lives in the West End of Vancouver, British Columbia. When not brewing her own visual concoctions, she freelances as a colour designer for animation productions including six seasons of Cartoon Network’s “Ed, Edd ‘n Eddy”.

Trees like bones, skulls like fruit, organs like flowers, branches like veins - where live things die and dead things grow. A place that while very real in what it describes, can only be an impossibility when taken literally by its fanciful phraseology. This seemed to be the very place where my images bore their own fruit, further connotating this strange nowhere-land where the similarities of design in nature, resemblance between all organic things, whether anatomical, botanical, or even zoological, come together. Somehow in this bone orchard everything is both mortal and immortal, yet all the same thing. And within these similarities lie questions, puzzles, possibilities that form playful nightmares, tricks of the eye - a natural surreality. Yet at the same time it convinces me that there can be no deceitful juxtaposition of imagery in this place and that the surreal is everywhere and all around. Because, really - that’s life.
Bonni Reid

Cameron Tiede - “Analog Punch”

Cameron Tiedes signature style is infused with raw energetic characters and stimulating color using acrylic on birch, surrounded by hand-made frames. Described as illuminated innocence, his work is as playful as it is honest, and is exhibited and collected around the world. His simple goal is to have people smile when viewing his work. Aside from his paintings, Camerons imagery has been featured on numerous products including skate and snow boards, apparel, prints, and more recently as limited edition collectable vinyl art toys. In furthering his quest for world domination, he is producing a new limited edition fine art multiple resin toy, and is also working toward his goal of an animated television series. Working as a freelance designer and illustrator, some of his commercial projects have included clients such as Disney, Mattel, Nickelodeon, DreamWorks and Warner Brothers. He also teaches illustration and design classes at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and FIDM in Los Angeles, CA.
