artist’s statement:
statement: a deep wish for continued renewal and re-invention is reflected not least in my activities as an artist. my objects and installations mirror an independent minded, intellectual and emotional panorama which is a direct manifestation of the eclectic, polyvalent and curious way in which i occupy myself with anything that is any way remotely connected with the nature of being and man’s interaction with and perception of the world within and without him. my investigation of a diversity of subjects, such as death and existence, is far from scientifically based but relies rather more upon a radically subjective view of me and my surroundings. i have a profound desire to communicate intricate ideas in a concise and reduced, often ironic manner, using a variety of easily (and not so easily) available domestic and adapted (p)re-manufactured materials. the confirmation and extension of self is a central theme in my work.

subject to change….

Michael Goodward’s sleek and sexy sculptures and installations hinge on a subtle twist of expectations or a surprising use of materials. In describing his work, the artist writes, “I have a profound desire to communicate intricate ideas in a concise and reduced manner using a variety of easily available domestic and industrial materials.” Reminiscent of the kind of post-conceptual alchemy performed by Tom Friedman, Goodward transforms mundane materials into poetic, humorous and sometimes ironic amalgamations.

“something or other”, for example, is a hairbrush in which the bristles have been replaced with hair, thus turning the very annoying phenomenon of hair getting caught in the hairbrush into a beautiful, albeit useless, aesthetic object. Text also plays an important role in Goodward’s work, and Goodward’s command of brevity is as witty as his juxtaposition of materials. Drawing on elements of design and architecture, Goodward places great emphasis on both the typeface of his texts, and the materials of his constructions.

The artist’s time spent in West Yorkshire and Switzerland - both landscapes of striking beauty - has no doubt played a significant role in formulating Goodward’s unique brand of polished poetics.

Nashville, Tn

In the past few years Harry Underwood, better known simply as Harry, has carved a singular niche for himself in the Nashville art community. With an eye for the subtleties of life, Harry’s work reads like a Polaroid image wrapped in a dime store candy wrapper. His characters are sometimes happy, sometimes haunting. The landscapes, like movie sets, isolate the characters into surreal moments presented in snapshot form.

Acrylic paint, graphite, varnish, paintings on wood
