Artist statement:

The work of german artist Kathrin Günter is based on the idea, that the observer and the observed, the so called “Beobachtungsopfer”, emanate from the very same movement and/or motivation.
In the photographic series Star shots, the artist stages herself as a star, who is being observed and caught through the lense of a paparazzi. The work “Iridium” plays with the invisible eyes which observe every step and eventually start to threaten you, even though you will never see them, as there is nobody else but your very own self. “Unidentified” demonstrates different descriptional layers of yet invisible memory, imagination and their confusion through recreating so called reality.
Her recent work, “Laborinth, a photomystical journey in progress” is also about catching the invisible, but here the focus lies on her own phantoms and hallucinations. This work is strongly and playfully connected to thoughtographic theories of the early 20th century.

Günter participated in many international solo and group exhibitions, including USA and Asia and her work is part of several museums and art collections. After many years living in Munich, Hamburg, Perugia and Barcelona she now lives and works in Berlin / Germany.

Artist Statement

Throughout my life I have felt a strong connection with animals. Several experiences of seeing death and decay of animals I had strong friendships and adorations for as a child, has forced me to reveal these feelings of distraught as an adult. I am interested in relationships between animals, people, and nature. I want the viewer to see the beautiful and grotesque, alluring and repulsive, and the synthetic verses organic. The experiences evoked by my installations should allow the viewer to choose to see my created environment as torturous or honorable. Am I trapping or letting free? Am I creating homage or merely informing?
