Exponieren? Exponieren!

Super-nice shout out from one smart lady

Nationally/internationally: Documenta 12-everything about it, it was superb. I’ll argue this unpopular perspective until I am blue; the Yves Klein retrospective at MUMOK in Vienna; the Seurat Drawings show at MOMA, and the Martin

Although logical analysis is useful in our daily lives, this method of thought often misrepresents how we construct narratives and experience time. Leaving behind the need for linear sequencing, Murphys work investigates scenarios in which logic breaks down, places where one can suspend their waking consciousness.

Upon this approach, Murphy allows a works chain of events to fold in on itself. As one begins to think along with the material, visual and temporal relationships progressively lapse within the mind of the viewer. In this way, a resonance is created which opens up notions of time and free will.

Martin Murphy received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2005, and his MFA from Hunter College in New York City. Martins work in video, installation, and soundscape uses recent technologies in order to explore the processes of perception by way of illusions and architectural interventions. Martins work has been shown in Kansas City at the Society for Contemporary Photography, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and he is currently designing an installation for the Queens Museum of Art in New York City.

The base for my work is captured by the terms polarity, balance and transition. Polarity is the governing principle of life. We experience our identity through conflict and intense cross-boarder experience. Our self is limited by desire and pain. Desire and pain are evaluation criteria for values and meaningfulness.

‘I like photography because I’m not able to paint, to sing or to make sculptures in wood or stone. I like the forest, the abandoned cottages, I also like the sky, the water and the stones. Because I wasn’t able to paint, crave or sing it, I begin to photograph it.’
