Black Maria Gallery

| 01/19/2008 Los Angeles, USA Discover 3D Black Maria Gallery explores the world of fine art stereography 19 January 16 February 2008 Opening Reception: Saturday 19th January, 7:00 10:30pm Black Maria Gallery: 3137 Glendale Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90039 Artists: Heather Lowe, Abe Fagenson, Perry Hoberman, Claudia Kunin, Franklin Londin, Larry Ferguson, Boris Starosta, Terry Wilson, Levon Parian and Ray Zone. Black Maria Gallery inaugurates 2008 with a January show of eight artists working in three-dimensional media. Curated by 3D artist and writer Ray Zone, the Discover 3D exhibition features a wide-ranging array of stereoscopic images viewed with many different techniques. Among the unique 3D formats presented are View-Master, large-scale wall mounted stereographs and anaglyphs as well as classic formats from visual history that use the conventional stereoscope. Several of the artists create work so that the stereo viewing device becomes an art object in itself, a wall-mounted or freestanding sculpture through which the 3D image is perceived. Other works make a site-specific use of the Black Maria Gallery environment to create a stereographic viewing zone. Virtual reality is also suggested by the creation of images that appear to inhabit the gallery space. Its exciting to present such a diverse array of stereoscopic images and formats, observes Zone. 3D imaging is a technique with potential for many fine art applications. The Discover 3D show is a great demonstration of artistic possibilities and just how many unique ways there are to look at three-dimensional images. Website: Discover 3D |

| Born 1977, USA the artist lives and works in Utah, USA My name is Maria Hathaway. I am a self taught artist. I specialize in colored pencil and watercolor but also enjoy working with oils and acrylics. My work is vibrant with color and emotion. I love doing portraits and am pationate about the portrayal of emotion and life experience through facial expressions. I strive through my art to show who we are as humans. I want to explore the passion, the sadness, the fear, and hope that make us real. So many beautiful people walk among us, entirely unnoticed or forgotten. I seek to bring attention to the invisible, the lonely, the joyfull, and the heroic. I seek to exhibit the beauty that exhists in each of us. I seek to portray humanity. When I create a piece using colored pencils I use a very labor intensive layering technique. I start with a basic sketch of what I’m going to draw. Then I begin adding layer after layer of color, blending and shading as I go. I often add the darkest shadows early on and slowly work my way toward highlights of white using a white pencil in the end. If a large area of one color is required, such as blue for a clear blue sky, I’ll often use a watercolor wash in order to achieve a smooth solid color without excessive effort. I must add that art is an ever changing process of growth and improvement. It is liquid. Nothing is permanent and every time I create a piece I learn something new and develop new methods and techniques. I am open to anything as long as the end result is vibrant in color and full of detail. It often feels as though my drawings or paintings draw themselves. A character or subject in a painting has something to say and I am merely an instrument through which it is enabled to exhist and therefore speak. I am not influenced by any artist -contemporary or historical. I am quite simply influenced by the world that I observe around me. I am fascinated by life itself which I consider to be the greatest work of art that has ever and will ever be achieved. I can only hope to dimly reflect the beauty of creation. I believe however that humanity has devine potential, unending and unfathomable. We have only as yet scratched the surface of that which we can and will become. I am most content when I am with my family. I am influenced greatly by their unique and wise perspectives. I have seen through them what it is to be truly good, and happy as a human being. I see the importance of love and truth and I would love to find a way to share this perspective through my art. Website: Willowrise |
