Mal Gormley

Dawnscape

Born 1950, USA
the artist lives and works in Damariscotta, Maine, USA

Mal Gormley earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Hartford in 1972, upon completing his studies in painting, sculpture, and color theory. He then turned to an aviation passion for subject matter and received numerous private commissions for portraits of vintage and modern aircraft. He then left art making for a full-time career in aviation, first as a commercial pilot and subsequently in aviation publishing in the 1980s. He has since been a regular contributor to McGraw-Hill AviationWeek.com publications.

After moving to Maine in 1994 with his family, Mal began to discover the rich history, subject diversity and art community of the region. His work explores the visual drama, metaphor and spiritual convergence in materials affected by time and tide. His art influences include Louise Nevelson, John Marin, the Wyeths, Richard Diebenkorn, and Winslow Homer. In 2005, he began exhibiting his work publicly and has since been selling his unique creations made from found objects, driftwood and reclaimed lumber to art collectors throughout the region.

Artist’s Statement
I make art because I enjoy the magic that happens when I put materials, color and images togetherthere’s almost always a surprisenew associations and meaning that resonate in me, often spiritually or poetically. My subjects reflect the wide range of my visual interests, from the merely representational to the mysterious effects of time, weather and nature. My sensibility ranges from regionalist hack to post-modern visionary; its sometimes confusing but always fun.
