| February 2008 Berlin, Germany LIGHTS “Light is the desert and the desert is just strange. It produces a lot of bizarre personalities.” Schneider is attracted to these personalities. And although the photographer and filmmaker is German born and somewhat based in Berlin she considers Wonder Valley located in a remote corner of the Mojave desert where she produces her photos and films ‘home’. “I am not a traveler. I prefer to stay in one place.” While most of Schneider’s work takes place in the desert her postproduction happens in Berlin. “Yes, light is a character in my photography. Why do people always ask me about light? It is there!” Asked about her current project she explained, “29 Palms, CA is a feature film/art project I am working on that explores the dreams and fantasies of a group of individuals who live in a trailer park in the desert.” CAMERA Shot on Polaroid film Schneider’s new film (in process) along with her ongoing photographs have an exaggerated washed out light indicative to the medium of aged Polaroid and specific to the place. She is very attracted to working in Polaroid but is neither nostalgic nor pessimistic about the imminent discontinuation of the technology (Polaroid will end production in the next year). Schneider doesn’t know what she will do without Polaroid and hopes a grassroots movement will save it but says, “I am not worried. I don’t plan that far ahead. Sometimes I love post-production but then just as well I need the desert surrounding me. My own reality. Passing by is transient but the memory or dream is permanent - and so is capturing it on film.” ACTION! Living in an Airstream trailer for months with her partner Lance “a smoke jumper”, their two cats and a bevy of characters Wonder Valley becomes the set and blank slate for Schneider’s intricate narratives. 29 Palms, CA began with a series of snapshots that loosely connect a narrative. Schneider continues, “Then they are put into a certain unchangeable order, though the story lines can be read differently. The narratives can contain just a few images, then scenes, then complete narration as books or short films and now a feature film!” Website: The 29Palms Project |
