Artist Statement
All artists must address and respond to the metaphor in their art. Although their intentions to lure the viewer into the external, physical, and formal elements; it is the internalized and intellectual journey that renders the visual experience. Inevitably it is the metaphor that connects the artist and the viewer completing the union between maker, signifier and recipient. I work the metaphor through gesture, topographical and tactile surfaces, and formal structure.

In my series of relief works, references to wood and/or rock are implied. The irony of gestured striations carved with knives and painted on synthetic substrates are intended to refer viewers to natural materials. These works are not intended to be illustrative; rather I consider them rooted in the tradition of abstraction. That is to say, I look to the themes of spirituality and/or forces of nature for inspiration and subject matter.

My works on paper are studies for larger works to be executed in either acrylic collage (paint is applied to plastic, peeled, torn and adhered to board or paper) or carved and painted materials such as wood or polystyrene. The tension between the human touch (drawing with a knife or creating collage with ripped paint) and compositional order/alignment allude to the internal struggle I have to bring meaning and purpose to my work. The paintings �Dark Night of the Soul�, �Veiled Cross� and �Wailing Wall�, for example, address this inner turmoil that I experience to discover deeper truths.

Presently I am a member of the faculty in the School of Visual Arts at Washtenaw Community College, Ann Arbor, Michigan. I earned my M.F.A. at Eastern Michigan University majoring in painting.
