Born 1967, Italy

BAUC- Breitner, Amsterdam under construction.
Baukje Spaltro paints temporary town views commonly known as bouwputten (construction sites). To her they represent the impermanence of a city: they refer to the former situation whilst
announcing change. Such temporary pictures of cities, where construction work is going on, can
appear as strange unethical images. It is unclear, for the most part, what will eventually emerge.
Our attention is drawn to sheds, heaps of sand, fences and, of course, the workers. The passer by isnt too bothered by this ambient, temporary chaos knowing eventually a new something will replace it.

Within the city scenes it is also frequently unclear what is the foreground and what is the
background, and what will and will not be kept. Baukje Spaltro is fascinated by this game between
fore- and background, and the interaction between past, present and future in these temporary scenes.
