| Born 1939, the artist lives and works in Tongyoung, South Korea Song Bang-woong was born in Tongyeong, home of Korean mother of pearl inlay. He began to study mother of pearl inlay at the age of 11 and eventually dedicated his life to the art. In 1990, his artistic achievement of 40 years was officially acknowledged when the Korean government honored him as a Master Craftsman of Mother of Pearl Inlay, and listed his art as Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 10. Master Craftsman of Mother of Pearl, Song Bang-woong is highly regarded for the simple beauty in his designs; however, he is also praised for creating a wide variety of motifs, from traditional geometric patterns to figures. He has continued to extend the borders of his design so that now he crafts complex landscapes that are comparable to a real painting. Website: Mother of Pearl Inlay |
