My art style started as �Spontaneous surrealism�, I was under impression of all great masters of this genre .

But in due course I have come to own style which I define as Conceptual.

The large please in my creativity is borrowed with a bible theme and abstract concepts which I try to show in my point of view.

Some critics and artists consider my works provocative and shocking, but it is not my main target - so I try to transfer that what I`m thinking about a concrete concept or event.

As to technique - I draw oil on a canvas and graphite on a paper. I have no formal art education, all that I know and I am able - only my personal merit.

For me in a picture- the main thing � is an IDEA.

Priority tool transferring this idea � is a Form.

Color plays a minor role - therefore I have started to work in a graphic variant and have refused paint, trying to express all in black & white, to concentrate all attention to the main thing in a picture - idea or the concept.

Erik Pevernagie (b. 1939) is a Belgian painter who has held exhibitions in Paris, New York, Berlin, D�sseldorf, Amsterdam, London, Brussels and Antwerp.

Life
He has been brought up in Brussels, a unique melting pot of two cultures (Latin and Germanic), as son and pupil of the expressionist painter, Louis Pevernagie (1904 - 1970). Attending the Brussels Atheneum for several years, at the foot of the legendary Manneken Pis , he has been infused by a vivid, surrealistic world, as described by Michel de Ghelderode. After deepening the Anglo-Saxon and Germanic cultural heritage he became Master in Germanic Philology at the Free University of Brussels (1961). He travelled worldwide, took a postgraduate degree at Cambridge University (UK) and became a Professor at Erasmus University. As he has always been keen on communication and international relations, he founded a social and cultural club in 1973: �Recreative International Centre� or �RIC�. For that purpose he acquired two boats in Brussels Port : �Ric�s River Boat� and �Ric�s Art Boat�. This gave him the opportunity to meet interesting characters, like Claude Lelouche, Atom Egoyan, Roy Liechtenstein, Axelle Red, Hugo Claus etc. He became a Member and Associated Academician of Accademia Internazionale del Verbano di Lettere, Arti, Scienze.

Work
The creation of his work is at the same time plastic and literary. Words, titles, sentences, graffiti are extensions and elucidations of the visual effect. His work is practically unclassifiable, as various currents seem to culminate in it. Communication or in-communication are recurring central themes in his work. � Details � and small objects of life, which surround us and which form the framework, through which we perceive the world, build the cornerstones of his work. Events from our collective memory are very often translated into his paintings. His artistic approach consists in hiding the subject in a singular environment. Figuration and abstractionism are forced to a compromise and highlight a wide range of emotions and reflections.
