Born 1974, China the artist lives and works in Shanghai, China About the Artist Born in Shanghai, 1974, obtained BFA (Painting) from Shanghai University, College of Fine Arts in 1997. Worked as an artist / graphic designer / photographer for international advertising agencies, publications, galleries and museums. As a graphic designer by trade, who spend a lot of time designing logos and visual identities for various clients. In art I can forget my trade and play around with those at will… Artist Statement I grew up in a time when there was little need for brand consciousness because there were only a few brands to choose from. I still can remember my first drink of Coca-cola at the age of ten, �it tasted like cough syrup!� Now twenty years later, Coke, Pepsi and many other brands penetrated even into the far reaches of the Middle Kingdom. Therefore, I play a tricky game by mixing various brand logos into traditional Chinese patterns. It just looks like a traditional Chinese pattern at first glance but a deeper look reveals an insight into Chinese consumer culture! In the past, our patterns filled with our natural surroundings � animals, flowers and trees, but our visual landscape is dominated by brands. By doing this, I hope people can develop a strong sense of how modern Chinese life destroyed by consumer culture! I work with different mediums, including traditional Chinese paper-cut, embroidery and carpet, also with modern skills like: stencil, photography and multimedia installation. I want to add up another layout for the Chinese traditional folk-art since it dying slowly; at the same time, explore new medium can carry on the tradition. Wide open your eyes please!
