Reilly Fitzgerald
B.A., B.Ed.(I/S), Diploma in Fine Art

Reilly Fitzgerald is an educator, a visual artist, and a writer currently living with his wife and three children in Clarenville, Newfoundland. Reilly graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts (English Major-Folklore Minor) and in 1999 with a Bachelor of Education. At one point Reilly was the only student in Newfoundland to have completed the courses Arts 1000 and 1001 from Memorial University of Newfoundland, because upon completing the inaugral class of Arts 1000, Reilly was the only student to enroll in its companion course Arts 1001. Since that time he has taught a large variety of subjects, including art, in several Newfoundland schools.
Reilly is an accomplished artist, illustrator, and writer who has been published both as an illustrator and writer and is an award-winning artist and playwright. His original watercolour and oil paintings are in private collections throughout Canada, the U. S., and even as far away as Brazil.
Reilly is an illustrator whose published works include Soldiering in Newfoundland, an educational poster series, Lucy Grey, a childrens book written by Bruce Stagg, and the cover of Bruces latest book, Lend Me Your Ears. Reilly’s depictions of John Cabot and Cabot’s ship “The Matthew” were reproduced and sold on numerous items as logos depicting the 500th anniversary of Cabot’s discovery of Newfoundland and North America in 1497. His work is strongly influenced by the picturesque geography and history of Newfoundland. One of his most popular compositional styles consists of realistic black-and-white images of “common” inhabitants from Newfoundland’s past, set against bright, colourful, impressionistic backdrops of Newfoundland scenes. Reilly titled one such series of these images,”Ghosts from the Past.”

Born 1960, Mexico

Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Toussaint, of French and Mexican descent, was interested in making art at a young age. Following his parents expectations to make a living, he entered the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara to obtain a degree in architecture (he graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree). During this time, he was encouraged by a professor from the nearby Visual Arts Department to make art on his own. Invited to work at the open workshop at the Centro de Arte Moderno, he made prints from 1982-83 and soon after, he embarked on a series of paintings. By the mid 1980s he had forged relationships with art professionals from the center, and was soon asked to collaborate as an assistant curator at the Instituto Cultural Cabaashis career in architecture officially replaced with art. 1995 he moved to Miami FL. Where he showed his work in several galleries and resided in Miami for 3 years then finally settled in Tucson where he keeps his studio. He has had several exhibits in different Mexican cities as well as other countries like Spain, France, Korea and the United Sates.

My work is, at core, deeply autobiographical. Each piece constitutes a pictorial contemplation of who, what, where I currently place myself as I navigate the changing landscape between past and present. Each piece poses a new challenge, a different question, presents an alternate lens. I am interested in ideas about the transformative power of art, the role of the imagination, but also in my own experience of what defines individual perception and the degree to which an ever evolving but fundamental sense of “self” seems to arise from early childhood and simply absorbs the subsequent impact of adult experience.

News: BOUND

10. August - 20. October 2007 Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool, United Kingdom
BOUND
Curated by Predrag Pajdic

With: Yasmeen Al Awadi, Oreet Ashery, Maja Bajevic, Martin Effert, Juul Hondius, Emily Jacir, Sagi Groner, Vesna Milicevic, Santiago Sierra, Penny Siopis, Emily Stainer, Milica Tomic, Rachel Wilberforce & Judith Witteman

BOUND is a group exhibition exploring human enslavement from historical references to modern day bondage. The exhibition will show works of international artists representing personal perspectives on the physical and psychological impact of slavery on humanity. BOUND will incorporate archival material, conceptual work, photography, video, live art performance, interventions and installations.

Today, slavery may be illegal, but it also exists and is inexorable growing rapidly throughout the world. Currently at least 12 million people are enslaved. Violently forced to work they are denied freedom, dehumanised and treated as property, bought and sold.

Regardless of ones race, religion, social, political and cultural background, BOUND will invite the viewer to engage with issues of contemporary slavery by penetrating one’s own profound experience in relation to freedom or choice of action. The exhibition will examine this gruesome condition in the contemporary world, as well as look into the questions of freedom, change, pride and belief. Stripped of any inhibitions and judgment, the artists in BOUND, will break Pandoras box wide open.
