Museum: Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art

Mary 23, 2007 Tarpon Springs, Florida, United States
The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art opened in January 2002 and features the work of Abraham Rattner (1893-1978), a figurative expressionist whose paintings are in museum collections around the world including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Vatican. His career spans the 20th century and influenced both European and American art. The collection also includes works by many of Rattner’s contemporaries - Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Rouault and author Henry Miller among others.

Allen Leepa, Rattner’s step-son, is a highly regarded educator, author and artist known for his abstract expressionist style. His significant philanthropy enabled the Museum to be created and his philosophy on art education is integral to the Museum’s mission.

The Museum’s galleries showcase Rattner’s works throughout his creative career from his first artistic training in the United States to his post-World War II “painting of the tragic”. The Museum also offers an interactive gallery which encourages visitors to literally walk through a Rattner painting to a zone where sight and touch are used to understand art. A large area displays Picasso’s famed Guernica which is accompanied by a 9 minute light and sound presentation explaining the fascinating cubist masterpiece.
